Why You Should Get New Tires When You Need Them

When it comes to the tires on your vehicle, it's important to pay attention to any problems that come up. Many vehicles now have a tire pressure monitor, which lights up on your dashboard if something is wrong with the pressure in one of your tires. When you drive about 15,000 miles a year, your tires will last about three to four years. Even when you drive much less than that each year, tires eventually need to be replaced regardless of the amount of tread that is left because the integrity of the rubber becomes compromised. Many car manufacturers recommend new tires even if the tread is good six years after the tires are manufactured.

Check the Tread on Your Tires

Use a penny to check the tread in your tires to get an idea of whether they need to be replaced or not. If your tires are only a couple of years old but you drive frequently, you can check the depth of your tread using a penny. Place the penny within the tread and if you can see the top of the head on the penny, your tread is wearing thin. While this is not a precise test, it can show you if it's time to consider new tires.

When You Have a Slow Leak

A slow leak can cause one tire to lose pressure periodically. When the weather gets cold, this may happen more frequently. If you need to add air to your tires more than once in a week or two, bring your car to a tire specialist to have your tires checked. You might have a nail in your tire that is causing the tire to leak, which may cause the tire to suddenly pop because the nail is in place. Pay attention to tire leaks and get them repaired or replaced immediately.

When You Don't Know How Old Your Tires Are

If you have no idea how old your tires are or what kind of shape they are in, an auto repair shop can inspect your tires for you. Don't put your own safety at risk by driving around on tires that are not safe for the road. When you aren't sure how long the tires on your car have been there or if the tread is sufficient, get your tires inspected. If you need new tires, there are a variety of affordable options for you to consider that are well worth the cost.
